In June 1901, Theodore Thomas—the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s founder and first music director—arranged a suite of music from Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold, the first of four operas in the composer’s Ring cycle. The suite was first performed by the Orchestra in October of that year under Thomas’s baton at the Auditorium Theatre.
