Mahler: Symphony No. 7, Abbado (CD)
Record Label: Deutsche Grammophon
Release Date: September 13, 1994
“Abbado’s command of Mahlerian characterization has never been more tellingly displayed than in this most problematic of the symphonies; even in the loosely bound finale Abbado unerringly draws the threads together.” — The Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music
An unsung hero of Mahler’s symphonies, the Seventh Symphony is arguably among the least performed due to its complexity (as opposed to the Eighth, which is likely least performed due to its logistics). In this recording, Abbado steers a middle course between clear-sightedness and hysteria, bringing a respectable reading to this masterpiece. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is at its finest, with Abbado providing an artistic vision that has stood the test of time.
